New for Spring/Summer 2018? Chanel Boss Karl Lagerfeld sends the fashion world into meltdown as he sports a white BEARD at Paris runway show

A bold new look turned heads at the Chanel runway show in Paris on Tuesday, but for once it wasn't the outfits attracting attention.

German designer Karl Lagerfeld has debuted a bushy beard for the first time, subsequently sending the fashion world into meltdown.

The fashion titan, who is known for his distinctive white ponytail and dark shades, showcased his newly-grown facial fuzz at the Dior Homme show in the French capital.

But it took centre stage at the Haute Couture Spring Summer 2018 spectacular, at the Grand Palais, when Lagerfeld took to the catwalk at the end of the show.

Looking typically sombre, he made a brief appearance with godson Hudson Kroenig and was met with rapturous applause from the front row - many of whom couldn't resist taking a snap on their iPhones.

His new look also found its way onto social media after Vogue's Susie Menkes and singer Rita Ora shared snaps on Instagram.

The 84-year-old's new beard hasn't gone unnoticed by the fashion pack, with Vogue declaring he had 'switched up his signature look'.

The style bible wrote: 'Considering he’s adhered to his strict uniform since the ’90s, the change is, indeed, newsworthy.'

The acid-tongued fashion titan famously only ever wears head-to-toe black with a starched collar and teamed with leather motorcycle gloves - and is reportedly the inspiration behind fashion villain Mugatu in the Zoolander movie franchise.

In a 2012 interview with Harper's Bazaar, Lagerfeld revealed just how much work goes into maintaining his signature look, with daily hair appointments and lashings of dry shampoo.

He said: 'I have my hair done because I hate to have hair in my face when I sketch. My hair is not white; it's kind of greyish, and I don't like the colour.

'So I make it totally white with Klorane dry shampoo. That is the best thing to do because my hair is always clean.'

Chanel's creative director famously lost 42kg (around 6 stone 9 lbs) in 2001 with a diet designed specially for him by weight loss guru Dr. Jean-Claude Houdret,.

Lagerfeld, who lives in Paris, later said of his transformation: 'I suddenly wanted to dress differently, to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane.

'But these fashions, modelled by very, very slim boy, and not men my age, required me to lose at least 40 kg (6 stone 4 lbs). It took me exactly 13 months.
